Small but brutal: test drive of the Suzuki Jimny SUV with an “automatic”

Despite the already quite long, by the standards of the automotive world, biography of the latest generation Suzuki Jimny, this car, as it turned out, does not cease to attract the attention of others.

We approach the assessment of the dimensions of cars from the standpoint of an outerwear seller, then the Suzuki Jimny will definitely be somewhere in the S-size area. Despite the fact that it is much more common for all of us to see real (frame, with an “iron”, and not an electronic all-wheel drive system) SUVs in sizes at least XL. And even better – XXXL. However, the concept of “mini-jeep” has been a Jimny feature since the very first day of the model’s existence. I don’t see much sense in the design of “spreading with thought”, since the last incarnation of “Jim” (his fourth generation) has been on the market for quite a long time.

But, knowing this, you are pretty surprised at the unexpected observation of the reaction of others to SUVs. I noticed that if you leave Jimny in a parking lot in a fairly crowded part of the capital, you will definitely find that some man is wandering around and carefully looking at the car when you return to the car. And mind you, this happens in Moscow, which is satiated with all kinds of foreign cars. Apparently, there really is something in the appearance of the Suzuki Jimny. 

If you put a thoroughbred German and Jimny parallel next to each other, then when viewed from the front, it is quite possible to assume that they are “relatives”. Both frame, with high ground clearance, both with “square” bodies, both with round “eyes” headlights. And both, as far as I know, girls like. At least, I personally drive Jimny of various generations, in the vast majority of cases, I see ladies of different ages. In principle, yes, most likely, it is convenient for a woman.

The car has a high (relatively, of course) driving position, which allows you to better feel the dimensions, a short body, which makes it easier to find parking spaces in the city. She is able to jump over any curbs without breaking the bumpers.

Not a car, but a “dream of the hostess” – if you want to carry mainly only yourself, your beloved. To drive, however, it will not work. The frame structure, short wheelbase and high center of gravity are not conducive to precise steering and aggressive driving. As well as a 102-horsepower 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with a 4-speed “automatic”.

But, hand on heart, we admit that you can’t really accelerate faster than 90 km / h in the city by any car. It is characteristic that just at this mark for “Jim”, perhaps, the range of comfortable driving speeds ends. No, it is, in principle, possible to fire it up to 120-130 km / h. But, firstly, taxiing at such a speed turns into work that requires a constant high concentration of attention. And, secondly, in this mode of motion, his motor starts, excuse me, to “eat” fuel like a jet fighter. You are constantly tormented by refueling gasoline in a 40-liter tank.

I activated the cruise control, connected the phone with music to the “multimedia” (with touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink) and rolled along the highway calmly …

But the main quality for which fans of the model appreciate Suzuk i Jimny is, perhaps, its off-road capabilities. Shod in “toothy” tires suitable for such purposes, he climbs through the mud and gullies, as they say, as if “stung in one place”. The right set of off-road transmission options – with a “lower” and other things – bumper overhangs like Smart, curb weight is only about a ton – what else is needed to storm the “pampas” ?!

Perhaps only one thing can stop Jimny off-road – if the driver himself puts him with his belly or a bridge on some hillock or stump. Or drown in a too deep ford. In other situations, “Jim” generates in the driver’s body a feeling of complete permissiveness. Thanks to him, even the city “blonde” will feel like a brutal jeep, commanding some indomitable and powerful iron contraption. In general, the car was good for the city and for the dirt. But in the space between these two substances, that is, on the highway, not really.

However, it would be strange to expect otherwise from a real SUV, albeit an S-size. Perhaps the main “disadvantage” of this machine is now one – its cost. Thus, the official website of the Russian representative office of Suzuki recommends that dealers of the brand sell Jimny at a price of 2.4 million rubles for a car with a 5-speed “mechanics” to 2.65 million for a variant with a 4-speed automatic transmission and “in full stuffing”. In a real car dealership, “Jims” are now trading at prices ranging from 2.8 million to 3.8 million rubles. Rather, they just stand in the showroom
