The University of Tokyo “Metaverse Engineering Department” will start in September … Considering lectures for female junior high and high school students

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Tokyo will open the “Metaverse Engineering Faculty” in September, which will hold lectures and events for junior high and high school students and working adults, using the virtual space “Metaverse” on the Internet. The aim is to develop the shortage of digital human resources and increase the number of female junior high and high school students who aspire to engineering and informatics. The goal is to reach over 100,000 students.

Taking advantage of the features of the Metaverse, where people can participate regardless of their place of residence or age, we will build a system where many people can learn engineering and informatics. On September 23, the opening ceremony will be held at the university’s Yasuda Auditorium, which has been recreated in the Metaverse, and guests and faculty members will participate in their own avatars.

For junior and senior high school students, lectures on digital technology and entrepreneurship will be open to the public free of charge, as well as laboratory tours and exchange meetings using the Metaverse. In particular, we will consider opportunities to actively provide information such as lectures for female junior high and high school students and information on employment and careers for women who have studied at the Faculty of Engineering.

Sponsor companies are also planning to hold lectures by experts on artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G for their employees.

Professor Takao Someya (semiconductor engineering), who is the dean of the department, is enthusiastic about increasing the number of human resources who can solve various social issues with digital technology by an order of magnitude.
